The Opportunity
Our client, an established global enterprise software company, is hiring a Software Engineer to join a team responsible for a large, business-critical workforce technology platform.
This is primarily a Java application-development position. The team is seeking an engineer who has built product features, backend services, APIs, and other functional components of web applications—not someone whose experience is concentrated primarily in infrastructure, deployment pipelines, automation, or cloud migration.
The organization is also modernizing its software-development lifecycle through generative AI. You will use tools such as Claude, GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, or comparable platforms and help the team move beyond basic code generation toward agent-based and specification-driven development workflows.
What You’ll Do
- Design, develop, test, and support features within a large enterprise web application.
- Build maintainable Java backend components using Spring and RESTful services.
- Translate product requirements into technical specifications, implementation plans, code, and automated tests.
- Develop unit, integration, and regression tests using JUnit, Mockito, and related tools.
- Troubleshoot defects and production issues, identify root causes, and implement durable solutions.
- Participate in design discussions, code reviews, Agile ceremonies, and continuous-improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with frontend engineers, product managers, QA professionals, architects, support teams, and other stakeholders.
- Use AI-assisted development tools to analyze requirements, plan implementations, create or revise code, generate tests, and validate solutions.
- Experiment with AI agents, reusable prompts, instructions, skills, tool integrations, and specification-driven development.
- Critically review AI-generated work for incorrect assumptions, design problems, security concerns, and maintainability risks.
Required Qualifications
- Approximately 2–5 years of professional software-engineering experience. Exceptional candidates with less experience and unusually strong Java and AI capabilities may also be considered.
- Hands-on experience building or enhancing enterprise web applications using Java.
- Strong working knowledge of:
- Java
- Spring Framework
- RESTful APIs and web services
- JUnit, Mockito, or comparable testing frameworks
- Experience developing backend application features rather than working primarily on infrastructure or DevOps initiatives.
- Understanding of how backend services integrate with user-facing web applications.
- Experience with continuous integration, automated testing, and Agile software development.
- Experience using AI development tools such as Claude, GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, or comparable platforms.
- Exposure to agentic AI development through professional work, personal projects, open-source contributions, or independent experimentation.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Authorization to work in the United States without current or future employer sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hibernate or JPA experience.
- Angular, JavaScript, HTML, or CSS exposure.
- Experience with Selenium, Playwright, Cucumber, or similar testing frameworks.
- Familiarity with Maven, Jenkins, Tomcat, or AWS.
- Experience creating AI agents, reusable instructions, development skills, or tool integrations.
- Familiarity with Model Context Protocol tools or similar agent-tool ecosystems.
- Experience with specification-driven development or AI-assisted implementation workflows.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
What Will Make You Successful
You are curious, collaborative, and willing to experiment. You recognize that AI can accelerate development, but that strong engineering judgment is still required to identify when an AI-generated solution is incomplete, incorrect, insecure, or poorly designed.
You are comfortable asking questions, learning from experienced team members, and working across functions to understand a mature and complex enterprise product.
